She has a plethora of state record and titles. She owns several national age group records and is a multiple All-American,
But the one thing that Sophia Gorriaran has not accomplished in her storied career at Moses Brown is a national high school title.
That should all change this weekend.
While several of our track & field athletes have remained close to home, competing at the New Balance Nationals Indoor Championships in Boston, Gorriaran will be among a good mix of talented athletes that will be at The Armory in New York City for the Nike Indoor Nationals.
Gorriaran is the top seed in both the 800-meter run (Saturday, 12:56 p.m.) and the mile (Sunday, 11:30 a.m.). She will also be lending her foot-speed on the Quakers’ 4×400-meter relay squad (Sunday, 3:21 p.m.).
The meet records in both the 800m and the mile could be in jeopardy with Gorriaran on the line. In the respective events, she owns PRs of 2:00.58 and 4:37.54. The current MR for the 800m is 2:03.57 by former Cardozo (NY) standout Sabrina Southerland in 2013. The mile record of 4:36.61 was set seven years ago by Katie Rainsberger of Air Academy (CO).
Moses Brown’s Salter Arms is entered in the boys’ long jump and 60m dash. Arms will face a stacked field in the long jump, which features the No. 1 leaper in the country, Tyson Adams, whohas a best of 25-1.5. Three others athletes have gone further than 24 feet. Arms, the state and New England champions, is ranked sixth with his best of 23-10.25.
In the weight throw, state and New England winners Jillian Leahy and Christian Toro of Lincoln will be splitting time between the two meets.
