Outdoor T&F Preview: Girls’ Javelin & Discus
Javelin
Gone to graduation is our individual champion, Cranston East’s Berthanie Jean-Philippe. Coming back this spring are the next four finishers from the State Meet with North Providence’s Elaina Furtado-Rahill (114-9), Barrington’s Maddie Gill (114-2), North Kingstown’s Carolyn Lafferty (111-10), and Faith Veasley (109-4). This is an event that NK could do very well at the state level as the Skippers’ Polina Wright is No. 5 among returnees with a best of 106-8. Based on 2022, this event appears to be wide open for the top positions on the podium.
Discus
The favorite here is Cumberland’s Alyssa Yankee, who was a double-winner at the states with PRs in the shot (38-9) and the discus (121-9). Yankee’s top effort is eight feet further than Chariho’s Weeko Thompson, who is the closest among returnees with a best of 113-9. Other top throwers from last year are Westerly’s Rachel Federico (108-3), Narragansett’s Kylee Bennett (106-5), and Lincoln’s Jillian Leahy (105-6).
