Hmm, let’s see.
Let’s get some of the best milers in the region, put them on the starting line and see what they can do.
Guess what? That vision, the ideal is happening next month. The brainchild of Marshfield High coach and Marathon Sports employee, Dennis Sheppard, some of our finest distance runners in New England (and beyond) have committed to our inaugural BSR Elite Scholastic Mile, a special event scheduled for Friday night, May 5 at Marshfield.
So far, the boys’ field includes 10 runners that have run under 4:19, including Devan Kipyego of Saint Raphael Academy. Kipyego. The recent runner-up finisher for the mile from last month’s New Balance Nationals, owns a best of 4:00.34. This will be his first time running a competitive mile since NBN and the Iowa State-bound senior and coach Chris Magill are looking for this race to be a memorable one with an attempt at a sub four-minute performance. Among others that have committed are Framingham’s Sam Burgess, St. John’s Prep’s Nathan Lopez and Westford Academy’s Paul Bergeron, our 1-2-3 finishers in the two mile at the Meet of Champions this past winter. Aidan Cox of Coe Brown Academy is one of several from out of state that will toe the line. Cox, who has a best of 4:14.76, is coming off a fifth-place finish for the 5K at NBN. There’s also Uxbridge’s Aidan Ross, who last year ran a best of 4:10.69.
The girls’ field is impressive, too. Leading the way, is Newton South’s Amelia Everett, who raced to her all-time best of 4:49.31 at last spring’s Meet of Champions. Everett is a month removed from placing third in the 800-meter run at New Balance. Brookline’s Camille Jordan, the winner of the mile at the MOC with a PR of 4:57.23, has also committed to next month’s race.
The race is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. and will be live streamed by Bay State Running. Sheppard has indicated that we’re still looking for elite runners to join the fields. The criteria fr boys is 4:15 or faster and sub 5:04 for girls.
