The first of several championships meets held during the outdoor track & field season happens this weekend with the league’s getting their due. The Eastern Division Championships at Barrington and the Central Division Championships at Conley Stadium are scheduled for Saturday, while the Northern Division Championships at Cumberland and the Southern Division Championships at West Warwick will take place on Sunday.
Judging by the league standings, all four divisions should create some excitement for the team titles.
For the boys, Hendricken (13-0), La Salle (12-1) and Classical (11-2) lead the way in the Central Division. Barrington (10-0) and Portsmouth (9-1) match up nicely in the Eastern Division. Cumberland (11-0), Smithfield (9-2), North Smithfield (9-2) and Lincoln (9-2) are the frontrunners in the Northern Division. In the Southern Division, it’s North Kingstown (8-0), West Warwick (8-1) and Chariho (7-2).
On the girls’ side, Cranston West (12-0) is the favorite in the Central Division with Classical (11-1) and La Salle (10-2) worthy contenders. Like their counterparts, Barrington (11-0) and Portsmouth (10-1) are the leaders in the Eastern Division. Smithfield (11-0) gets the nod in the Northern Division. Ponaganset (9-2), North Smithfield (9-2) and Cumberland (9-2) are also strong. Neighboring rivals South Kingstown (9-0) and North Kingstown (8-1) renew their common rivalry in the Southern Division, but don’t count out West Warwick (7-2).
