There’s busy and there’s good busy.
This week is good busy. Good busy for our track & field athletes and good busy for us here at Ocean State Running.
The State Meet is over and a very successful New England Championships is now in the books. What’s in store now are some national competitions that should continue to showcase the incredible talent we have here in the smallest state in the union.
On Wednesday night, Devan Kipyego will try and make a little history. The Saint Raphael Academy senior will be out in Seattle where he”s among an insanely-loaded field for the mile run at the Brooks PR Invitational. This was the meet last year that the Iowa State-bound runner nearly broke four minutes by finishing third overall with an all-time best of 4 minutes, 0.64 seconds. Kipyego will be eyeing that milestone again this week and appears ready to do it with the right kind of race.

The Brooks PR Invite provides the perfect opening act for more track & field action with the nation’s best. Our athletes will be at one of three national competitions with most making the five-hour trek to Philadelphia for the New Balance Nationals at UPenn’s historic Franklin Field. It’s here where a few of our athletes have a chance of making the podium, including the No. 1 spot. Kipyego is the defending titlist in the 2K steeplechase (see above photo). He’ll also toe the line in the mile. Moses Brown’s Sophia Gorriaran is favored in the 800-meter run. The Harvard-bound senior will also be looking to break her own state mark in the mile where she faces Sadie Engelhardt. the Ventura (CA) sophomore, who will be eyeing Katelyn Tuohy’s national mark of 4:33.87. We can’t forget our hammer throwers. The boys’ event features North Kingstown’s Ethan Wordell and state champion Christian Toro of Lincoln, ranked No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, from coast-to-coast. In the girls’ hammer Woonsocket’s Adelaide Caron and state titlist Jillian Leahy are both among the top six in the country. How about some of our other top athletes heading to NBN. such as West Warwick’s Lisa Raye, who was a triple gold-medalist at the recent New England Championships where she broke the state 300-meter hurdle record.
