Several top RI high school stars, who also compete for the Providence Cobras, will be heading to Oregon at the end of the month to compete on the USATF Junior Olympic Championships.
The athletes earned their berths by virtue of their top-eight finishes at this past weekend’s Region 1 JO Championships in Craryville, N.Y.
Leading the way was West Warwick’s Lisa Raye, who captured the 100-meter dash and 200m in the age 15-16 division. Raye blazed to a time of 11.96 seconds in the 100m. Finishing second was East Providence’s Nazarae Phillip in 12.69. Raye and Phillip went 1-2 in the 200m with the Wizard standout racing to a time of 24.30 to Phillip’s 26.46 effort.
In the girls’ age 17-18 division, West Warwick’s Xenia Raye won the 100m (12.12) and was second in the 200m (24.89). Cranston West’s Ailani Sutherland took the bronze in both events with times of 12.27 and 25.11, respectively.
Classical’s Zaida Depina was triumphant for 400m in the age 17-18 division where she was timed in 58.90.
In the age 15-16 and 17-18 4x100m relays, the Cobras also struck gold.
