As to be expected this time of year, things are starting to heat up this indoor season. In the three meets that our athletes competed in on Saturday and Sunday – the Marathon Sports Winter Classic, the Ocean Breeze Freedom Games and the URI Indoor Track Classic – we saw several move up in the state rankings. For this week’s HOKA Athletes of the Week, we’re featuring two those athletes. Congratulations to Cranston West’s Alonzo Parker Sharpe and West Warwick’s Xenia Raye, who we nominate for this week’s honor.
Parker-Sharpe had a busy and very successful day at the inaugural Marathon Sports Winter Classic. The Falcons’ senior won the 60m dash (7.16) and 200m (22.67) at Sunday’s competition. If that wasn’t enough, he also finished fourth in the 400m (51.51). In both the 60m and 400m, Parker-Sharpe ran all-time best. While she didn’t attain gold, Raye proved she’s ready to contend in the sprint events. She was second in the 200m with an indoor best of 24.94 and third in the 60m with a PR of 7.78.
