With the statewide competitions starting to kick into gear, we’re going to get things started with our HOKA Athletes of the Week series for the outdoor track & field season. This past weekend, we had a couple of meets – the second annual BSR Mid-Distance Classic at St. John’s Prep and the CT Distance Festival at Xavier High in Middletown, both of which were held on Friday night.
For this week’s honor, we’re picking one from each. Congratulations to St. Raphael Academy’s Rory Sullivan and La Salle Academy’s Garrett Giroux-Pezzulla, our respective female and male recipients.
The Saints’ Sullivan was among the entries in the mile run at the always-competitive CT Distance Festival. The Furman-bound senior took advantage of the elite field by achieving a running milestone. Sullivan broke five minutes for the first time in an individual race, placing fifth overall in the seeded section with a time of 4:59.43.
At the BSR Mid-Distance Classic, Giroux-Pezzulla defended his title in the 400m with a state-leading 50.42. The victory certainly didn’t come easy for the Rams’ talented sophomore. A swarm of teammates were right behind him as four more Rams made the podium and were separated by less than two seconds.
