For this week’s HOKA Athletes of the Week, four was the magic number. We had a 4:10.64 mile by La Salle Academy sophomore Marshall Vernon at the BSR Elite Scholastic Mile, on Friday, a meet where St. Raphael’s Rory Sullivan nearly pulled out a win in the girls’ race with an all-time best of 4:55.14. There was also a 16-foot PR and nation No. 2 toss of 214-9 in the hammer by Woonsocket’s Shamrock Thoun at the Northern Division Championships. But while we had these outstanding performances and plenty more by our track & field athletes this past weekend, it’s hard not to pick two athletes that walked away with four gold medals at their respective competitions. Congratulations to our respective female and male recipients for this week’s honor, West Warwick’s Lisa Raye and Barrington’s Ethan Knight.
The Wizards’ Raye made her presence known at Southern Division Championships on Saturday. It was there that the sophomore phenom captured the 100-meter dash (11.87 seconds), 200m (24.44), 110m hurdles (14.44) and 300m hurdles (43.89).
The Eagles’ Knight swept the hurdles at the Eastern Division Championships on Saturday with victories in the 110m HH (14.27) and the 300m IH (39.25). He also ran legs on the winning 4x100m (42.26) and the 4x400m (3:33.33) relays.
