One last chance to qualify, one last chance to showcase their talent before next Saturday’s State Meet.
That’s what’s on tap this weekend for our track & field athletes with the annual Bishop Hendricken and Mount Pleasant invitationals. Per usual. the boys head down to Hawk Country in Warwick, while the girls make the trip to Mount Pleasant’s historic Conley Stadium in Providence.
Last year’s meets, like previous years, didn’t disappoint.
At the Hawk Invite, Chariho Regional’s Elias Sposato broke 50 seconds for the first time to capture the 400m with his time of 49.97. Sposato would go onto win his specialty at the State Meet and take the 300m crown at the indoor championships this past winter. The Chargers senior is the top-ranked runner in the 400m this season with his current best of 48.58 from his victory at last Saturday’s Class B Championships. North Smithfield’s Aidan Bienvenue, the 300m hurdle winner, would also follow up his victory at Hendricken with his first state title. He’s ranked No. 2 behind Barrington’s Ethan Knight in the 300m IH.
Several at the Mount Pleasant Invitational would go two-for-two with triumphs at the two meets. Among them were Lincoln’s Jillian Leahy (hammer), Portsmouth’s Morgan Casey (high jump) as well as Moses Brown’s Sophia Gorriaran and Chariho’s Erin vonHousen, except theirs came in different events. After winning the 400m at Mount Pleasant, Gorriaran concluded her outstanding high school career on RI soil by capturing the 1,500m and 800m at the states. Von Housen followed up her win in the 800m with her first individual state crown, a victory in the 3K.
