It was another ho-hum day for Hendricken pole-vaulter Carson Dean.
The Hawks senior, who has established new PRs nearly every time he’s competed in his specialty this outdoor season, was at his best once again.
Just a week after breaking the state record at the Class A Championships, Dean was able to repeat the magic at Saturday’s Paul Alianiello Hendricken Invitational. The gifted vaulter achieved a new milestone, clearing 16-feet even to erase his seven-day-old record by three inches.
Dean wasn’t the only athlete to achieve a meet record at the 59th annual event. La Salle’s Jalen Moseley broke an 11-year-old mark in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles with a state-leading 38.0 seconds. The Rams’ talented tenth-grader was certainly pushed in his effort with St. Raphael’s Devan Tavares taking second with a PR of 38.46. Moseley broke the 2014 mark of 38.14, set by former North Kingstown standout Benjamin Stewart.
While the wind may have played a factor in a sub four-minute performance, the 1,500m still proved to be a fast and competitive race. The Hawks’ Colby Flynn broke from a pack that included most of his teammates, and Portsmouth’s Sean Gray, with about 300m left to win in 4:00.77. Gray secured the runner-up spot in 4:03.51. Hendricken took the next six spots with all of its runners dipping under 4:11.
Just .70 of a second separated the top three finishers in the 4x100m with East Providence taking the title in 43.29. Competing in the previous heat, North Kingstown secured second at 43.92, just two tenths ahead of St. Raphael (43.94) in third.
A week after the Class B meet where he became the state’s fourth seven-footer in the high jump, Barrington’s Caleb Satisfield was back in his winning mode in a jump of a different sort. The Eagle standout claimed the long jump with an outdoor best of 21-7.
Pilgrim’s Hunter Schobel maintained his consistency and unbeaten streak in the triple jump with a near best of 44-10.25. In five major meets this season, Schobel has gone no less than 44-4. He owns a PR of 45-2.5 from his record-breaking performance at the Sgt. Brian St. Germain Invitational on May 3.
Nation-leader Owen Spira came out on top once again in the hammer throw. The Scarlet Knights senior attained gold with a heave of 226-10. Finishing second was East Greenwich’s Ryan Evans at 225-3. Jack Harmon of North Kingstown was third with a toss of 223-2.
