Memorable Moments: Hoskins Ends Season On Top With National Hammer Throw Title

It was yet another eventful season for our RI track & field athletes. Throughout the summer months, Ocean State Running will feature some of our most memorable performances during the outdoor campaign. Here we feature Coventry’s Mia Hoskins.

You could sense it early in the spring campaign—Hoskins was on track for something special in the hammer throw. At the season-opening Knights of Columbus Relays on April 5, the Knotty Oakers senior made that clear, striking gold with a then personal-best toss of 173-6, a 10-foot improvement.

And from there, she only got better—especially when it mattered most.

After placing second at the Class A Championships, the Columbia University signee was untouchable in her final four meets, collecting victories at the Mount Pleasant Invitational, the State Meet, the New England Championship, and the crown jewel: the New Balance Nationals.

And what better way to earn her first national title than with pure drama? On her final throw inside the circle. After being bumped from the lead by Amelia Bawcombe of Alexandria City (VA) on Bawcombe’s sixth attempt, Hoskins answered back with a clutch, career-best toss of 188-8—securing the win and the coveted hardware.
