The indoor track & field season has arrived.
As always, we have several talented returnees set to make an impact, a group of notable newcomers ready to challenge the field, and—without question—a few surprises waiting in the wings. Expect plenty of new faces atop the podium this winter, with only six state champions from the 2024–25 season returning.
Here we continue to preview the upcoming winter campaign. We’ll take our best shot at predicting the top performers in each event.
Below we feature the boys’ long jump, high jump and pole vault.
Long Jump
The podium could feature several familiar faces in this event. Returning this year are Barrington teammates Patrick Trainor and Caleb Satisfield, the state’s reigning indoor and outdoor champions. Trainor captured the indoor title last winter, while Satisfield earned the outdoor crown in the spring. Trainor was consistently in the 21–22-foot range throughout last year’s indoor season, highlighted by a 22-4.5 runner-up finish at the East Coast Invitational and a 22-3 jump to secure his state title. Satisfield also showed strong consistency, jumping 21-10 for second at the indoor state meet and 22-4 to claim the outdoor championship.
Like Barrington, La Salle features two major contenders in senior Antonio Bearden and junior Jalen Moseley. Moseley placed fifth at last February’s State Meet and surpassed 22 feet four times last season, including a PR of 22-9.5 at the divisional—the top mark among all returning athletes. He won the Class A title and later defended that crown during the outdoor season, finishing second to Satisfield at the state championship two weeks later. Bearden also ranks among the top returnees with a best of 21-9.5, which earned him the silver medal at the indoor states.
High Jump
The favorite in this event is Satisfield, who swept both the indoor and outdoor state meets last year. The Barrington standout also made history last spring by becoming the state’s fourth athlete to clear seven feet, hitting the mark exactly to claim the Class B title. Prior to his seven-footer, Satisfield had cleared a personal best of 6-6 on four occasions across both seasons. Keep an eye on West Warwick’s Zachary Morgan, who has already made a statement this indoor season by opening the fall campaign at the RITCA Injury Fund Carnival with a jump of 6-6—just an inch shy of his 6-7 best from last outdoor season. Morgan finished third at last year’s state meet. North Kingstown junior Cole Shotwell is also in contention; he placed fourth at last year’s championship meet and tied for sixth in the outdoor season. Shotwell cleared a best of 6-3 during indoor competition and remained steady in the 6-0 to 6-2 range throughout the spring.
Pole Vault
While the event won’t count toward league scoring this season, it will be scored at the class and state meets. Gone to graduation are last year’s top two vaulters, Hendricken’s Carsen Dean and La Salle’s Alex Campbell, who finished first and second at the State Meet. The leading contenders this winter are Smithfield’s Michael Farland and North Kingstown’s Cole Shotwell, both of whom cleared a best of 12-0 during last year’s outdoor season. Farland placed third at the outdoor meet at that height, with Shotwell right behind at 11-6. With the event included in scoring this season, we could see several top athletes from last spring competing in the pole vault, including Barrington’s Caleb Appleyard, South Kingstown’s Finn McCann, and Barrington’s Kelly Hill, who each cleared 11-0 last spring to finish sixth through eighth at the state meet.
