It’s Championship time. How do you single out just two athletes among the several that performed at their best with hopes of individual and/or team glory? It’s about as difficult as you imagine as the stars were plentiful throughout the day when schools from Class A, Class B and Class C collided at the PCTA field house in three separate competitions.
So where do we start?
On the girls’ side, La Salle’s Alyssa Parenteau captured the 1,500-meter run (4:42.91) and the 1,000m (2:59.56) with PR efforts to help lift the Rams to the Class A team title. In the same meet, Hope’s Zariyah Brown swept the sprints with victories in the 55m dash (7.39) and 300m (41.82), and also a leg on the second-place 4x200m relay squad.
Class B produced another multiple victory day for Mount Hope’s Thea Jackson, who claimed titles in the 55m (7.16), the high jump (5-5) and the long jump (17-10.5). In Class C, Exeter/West Greenwich’s Nina Olawuyi matched that feat, sweeping the 55m hurdles (8.95), long jump (17-9) and high jump (5-0).
The boys’ side delivered just as many headline performances. Barrington’s Patrick Trainor amassed 30 points in the Eagles’ dominating victory in Class B, striking gold in the 55m dash (6.45), 300m (36.25) and the long jump (21-1). In Class C, St. Raphael Academy’s Joseph McFarland also found the victory stand three times, winning the 1,500m (4:16.27), the 1,000m (2:47.79), and running a leg on the Saints’ first-place 4×800m relay (8:42.65).
All of these performances—and many more—stood out at this past weekend’s Class Championships. But when it came time to select this week’s New Balance Athletes of the Week, the nods went to Moses Brown’s Skylar Maxwell and La Salle’s Jalen Moseley, our girls’ and boys’ recipients.
Skylar Maxwell was part of four event victories for Moses Brown, which captured its fifth straight Class C team title. She pulled off a grueling double with wins in the 600m (1:38.43) and the 300m (42.05). Maxwell also anchored the Quakers’ first-place 4×200m relay (1:48.13) and 4×400m relay (4:23.16).
La Salle needed every one of the points Jalen Moseley produced in its one-point victory over Bishop Hendricken in the Class A meet. The Rams’ gifted junior finished with 38 points, highlighted by a meet-record leap of 23-10.5 in the long jump. Moseley also added wins in the 55m hurdles (7.71) and the high jump (6-4), along with a second-place finish in the 55m dash (6.54).
Congratulations to Skylar and Jalen on earning this week’s well-deserved honors.
