Paul Short Run Included Several Former HS Stars

For a few former high school standouts, now competing at the collegiate level, It was a reunion of sorts this past Saturday at the annual Paul Short Run

The popular meet, held at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Penn., features eight races and always seems to attract some top competition from throughout the region.

Recent La Salle alum Caroline Cummings, a freshmen at Georgetown, had a superlative performance on the Goodman Campus X-C Course. She finished second overall in the Women’s Open 6K, covering the 3.6-mile distance in a time of 21 minutes, 48.2 seconds. Cummings was just a few meters behind the individual winner, Saint Joseph (PA) freshmen Elaine Estes, who was timed in 21:46.2. Tori Chace of North Kingstown, a senior at Bucknell, was 103rd in 24:05.6.

In the Men’s Open 8K, Cumberland grad Cole McCue, a freshman at George Washington, clocked 26:39. He was 150th overall.

Bryant frosh Phil Simas (La Salle Academy) was the top local finisher in the Men’s College Brown 8K. Simas ran a strong time of 26:16 to place 106th overall. Marist freshmen Jackson Borge (North Kingstown) was 222nd with a time of 27:19.

Rylee Shunney, onetime star for East Greenwich and a freshman at UMass Amherst, was 211th in the Women’s College Gold 8K where she crossed the line in 22:35.2.

The meet also featured four high school races. Pilgrim’s Keaney Bayha made the long five-hour trip well worth it. She was ninth in the Girls HS Brown 5K with a big-time PR of 18:39.7.
