Nation’s Best, No Problem: Wizards’ Lisa Raye Breaks Own State Marks At VA Showcase

It’s considered one of the premier indoor track & field competitions in the country, a meet that can rival any of the national championships that are held in March.

And so far all has been simply superb for West Warwick’s Lisa Raye at this weekend’s VA Showcase. Two races, two new state records for the Wizards’ gifted junior inside the Virginia Sports Center.

In the seeded 55-meter dash on Friday, Raye improved on her nation No. 2 by blasting across the line in first with a PR and state mark of 6.81 seconds. The Georgia-bound sprinter beat an insane field that has three runners break 6.9 and a total 10 under seven seconds. Just as she did in the 55m, Raye broke her own RI mark in the 200m dash, too. In that race, she clocked a winning 23.39, a time that also puts her at No. 2 in the country.

“During the race, all I was saying to myself was PR, PR, PR,” Raye said to milesplit.com. “My 200 (meter) time was 23.5 from last year and I wanted to break that.”

West Warwick’s Xenia Raye also had a strong day at the meet. The Wizards senior finished 12th overall in the 55m dash with a season best of 7.02. She blazed to an all-time best of 39.37 in the 300m, an effort that placed her 14th overall.

With her victory in the 55m, Lisa Raye earned a prime lane assignment for the Invitational 60m on Saturday. Her current state mark in this event is 7.31 from last year’s Nike Indoor Nationals.
