Smithfield is one of those programs that consistently finds itself among the top 10 teams in the state. During the 2024-25 season, the Sentinels placed fifth at the Class B Championships and finished eighth at the State Meet.
While Smithfield graduated its top runner, Michael Goodson — who placed 16th at last year’s State Meet — the rest of its varsity squad is set to return. Leading the charge are senior Ben Goodson, sophomore Mason Smith, junior William Busam, sophomore Hunter Vallee, junior Daniel Healey, and senior Avery Ferreira. All six posted personal 5K bests between 17:38 and 18:47 last fall.
Behind Michael Goodson, his younger brother Ben was the next fastest at the states with a best of 17:38.20), good for 61st overall. Smith followed by placing 72nd in 18:02.74. Busam (77th, 18:07.73), and Vallee (86th, 18:17.16) weren’t too far behind. This quartet should form a strong core for the Sentinels as they look to remain competitive again this season.
