Memorable Moments: Olawuyi Shines With Four-Event Performance At State Meet

Throughout the next few weeks, Ocean State Running will be putting the spotlight on some of the top performances of the outdoor track and field season. While we’ve had our share of showstoppers over the past few months, these are the performances we feel stood out the most.

Whenever Nina Olawuyi competes at a meet, particularly during championship season, she hardly gets a break. One thing is certain — the Exeter/West Greenwich senior certainly isn’t complaining.

Each time the multi-event star competes against her state rivals, success often follows. And it was no different at the State Meet.

The versatile Olawuyi, who was recently named the Rhode Island Girls’ Track & Field Player of the Year, was at her best at the June 6 meet. The Scarlet Knights standout captured titles in the 100-meter hurdles (15.06 seconds) and the triple jump (39 feet, 2 inches). She also reached the podium by placing third in the long jump (18-2) and fourth in the high jump (5-0). Olawuyi’s effort in the triple jump was a personal best by nearly a foot, and her final tally of 30 points would have placed her in a tie for seventh place with Classical among the meet’s 31 teams.
