Outdoor T&F Preview: Boys’ Discus and Javelin
Discus
For the past two years, this event has been dominated by two-time state champion Tarik Robinson-O’Hagan. With the graduation of the former Woonsocket High great, the field is wide open. The early-season favorite is Middletown’s Jason Hayes, the only non-senior to place at last year’s championship meet, taking third overall with a toss of 156 feet, 6 inches. A few weeks earlier, Hayes unleashed his all-time best of 160-6 to take the Southern Division Championships. Who are some of the other top competitors? Barrington’s Michael Fay, who had a solid indoor season in the weight throw and shot, is No. 2 among returnees with a best of 146-0. There’s also Lincoln’s talented thrower Christian Toro (145-2) and Cumberland’s Joseph Chesney (137-10), who just missed making the podium in 2022 with a seventh-place finish. North Kingstown’s Ethan Wordell (137-10) and Hendricken’s Keith Daigneau (134-6) we’re also expecting to show some improvement this season with the possibility of a top placement come season’s end.
Javelin
It was a strong year for the javelin last year with state champion and All American Maxwell Cute of La Salle Academy leading the way with an eventual nation No. 7 of 211-0 from the American JavFest . Behind him in the state rankings were North Smithfield Adam Dubois (197-0) and La Salle’s Parker Rush (188-2). The talented trio has since graduated, leaving Bishop Hendricken’s Cameron Chinn as our top returnee, a senior that certainly has a chance to win it all this spring with the potential to challenge the 190-200 foot mark. Chinn was fourth at last year’s states and had a PR of 185-1 at the Classical Classic. Also coming back this season are 150-footers, Javien David of East Greenwich (157-3), Barrington’s Charly Potter VI (156-7) and the Lions’ Toro (153-0).
