The Christmas holiday left this past weekend free of competition for our track & field athletes. But that doesn’t mean we were minus any top performances for this week’s HOKA Athletes of the Week. For our weekly honor we’re picking two athletes that we felt shined the brightest during the week in league competition. Congratulations to Middletown’s Cam Miller and West Warwick’s Lisa Raye, our respective male and female recipients.
Miller took over the No. 1 spot in the high jump in a Southern Division meet on Dec. 19. The Islander senior leaped a huge PR of 6 feet, 4 inches. That effort moved him ahead of previous state-leaders, Demtrius Outland of Central and Jakob Reyes of Bishop Hendricken, who both have cleared 6-2 this season.
For girls, Raye opened her league season in the Headley Division on Dec. 18. In typical fashion, the Wizards gifted sophomore produced three state No. 1s with victories in the 55m dash (7.29), 300m (42.40) and the 55m hurdles (8.79).
