Throwers’ Pentathlon: Lions’ Durang, Novans’ Piette Take Titles

It was all about the Throwers on Wednesday.

The Classical High girls and Lincoln boys were the team champions, while the Woonsocket’s Isabella Piette and the Lions’ Tyler Durang were the respective individual titlists at the third annual Bob Gourley Throwers’ Pentathlon at Conley Stadium.

With three of its throwers among the top six, Classical earned the girls’ crown with 5,087 points. Woonsocket was second with 4,255 points. Cumberland was third with 3,357 points.

Piette, who is one of the state’s top hammer throwers, collected a considerable amount of points in her specialty with the No. 1throw of 158 feet, 4.75 inches (48.28 meters). She also had a top finish in the 25-pound weight, placing fourth with a heave of 44-6 (13.56m). The Woonsocket junior finished with a combined 1,802 points in the five events. Taking second was Classical’s Gifty Bediako with 1,776 points. Toll Gate’s Vanessa Jones was third with 1,708 points.

Bediako was first in two of the events with bests of 48-1 (14.65m) in the 20-pound weight and 35-11 (10.95m) in the shot. Other event winners were Classical’s Harmony Forrest in the javelin (85-4, 26.02m) and the Prout School’s Julia Smith in the discus (116-11, 35.64m)

In the boys’ competition, Durang scored 2,631 points for his victory. The state indoor shot-put champion won two events and was a runner-up in another. He was first in the javelin (134-0, 40.86m) and the discus (134-1, 51.91m). The Lions’ senior was and also second in the shot (46-5, 14.06m). Individually, East Greenwich’s Ryan Evans was second with 2,338 points. Placing third was Barrington’s Joe Adams with 2,554 points.

Other event winners were Smithfield’s Ben Cicchitelli in the shot (46-5, 14.14m), and Hendricken’s Matt Giuliano in the 25-pound weight (67-7, 20.60m) and hammer (217-6, 66.30m)
