The short cross-country season has now less than five weeks until the State Meet. For this week’s HOKA Athletes of the Week, we’re picking two runners we expect will be among our stronger contenders for the girls’ and boys’ individual titles.
Congratulations to North Kingstown’s Abbie Tighe and Portsmouth’s Sean Gray our recipients of this week’s honor.
The Skippers’ Tighe posted the fastest time among out state entries at this past Saturday’s Ocean State Invitational. The NK sophomore finished eighth in the featured Championship race where she was timed in 19:03.20. Gray, along with state rival, Marshall Vernon, earned decisive crowns at the Wickham Park Invitational and Bowdoin XC Classic, respectively. Both had equally-impressive performances on difficult 5K courses. We’re giving Gray the edge here for the simple reason that his times was faster. Gray won his race in 15:47, while Vernon was timed in 15:51.2
