It was yet another eventful season for our RI track & field athletes. Throughout the summer months, Ocean State Running will feature some of our most memorable performances during the outdoor campaign. Here we feature Cumberland’s Will O’Shea.
Prior to the State Meet, we predicted that the boys’ 1.500-meter run would be one of the more exciting races of day with any of a host individuals capable of pulling off the win. The race turned out just the way we expected with several still in contention in the late stages. Coming down the final stretch, a pack of five was whittled down to just two with race leader and La Salle Academy sophomore Marshall Vernon and O’Shea battling it out. With a well-timed kick, the Cumberland senior earned his first individual title by passing Vernon with about 40m left to win in 3:56.69, just .31 ahead of Vernon. On the biggest of stages, O’Shea ran a big-time PR with a five-second best. Vernon would cross the line in 3:57.08 and three more would also break the four-minute barrier.
O’Shea’s performance at the states highlighted a season thar saw him break 4:20 for the mile/1,600m four times. including a mile best of 4:17.84 at the Glenn B. Loucks Games.
