Class C Championships – Girls’ Preview (Updated)

Throughout the remainder of the week, Ocean State Running will preview all six meets (boys & girls) for this weekend’s class championships. Here we feature the girls’ Class C meet. The performance lists come out Friday at noon. For some events, we’re predicting who we believe will be competing at Sunday’s meet. If needed, we’ll adjust once we have access to the lists.

Class C Championships – Girls

Day/Time: Sunday/10 a.m.

Site: Narragansett

Teams: Moses Brown, St. Raphael Academy, North Smithfield. Prout School. Narragansett, Bay View, Lincoln, Exeter/West Greenwich, Mount St. Charles, Middletown, Scituate, Juanita Sanchez, Burrillville, Tiverton

Last year’s results: Spurred by three individual victories from Sophia Gorriaran, Moses Brown won the team title with a 115-81 victory over second-place Narragansett

Events To Watch: Sophia Gorriaran is entered in the 3K, 1,500m and 800m. In all three races, the Moses Brown senior is the top seed and overwhelming favorite. Will she run all three? Maybe, maybe not. Gorriaran has all-time bests of 2:00.58 for the 800m and 4:21.83 for the 1,500m and 9:48 for the 3,000m. She is competing in the 800m after running the event against a pro field on Friday in a time of 2:04 at the Trials of Miles Track Night NYC. In the 1,500m, Mount St. Charles’ Emmy Belvin has the two seed at 4:45.80. She’s the only other runner under five minutes. We’re expecting she’ll be looking to PR with the expected fast, pace-setting of Gorriaran in front of her. Belvin is also the two seed in the 800m with a 2:19.20 best…Exeter/West Greenwich’s Nine Olawuyl could score as many as 40 points by herself. She’s the top seed in the long jump (17-3), 300m IH (50.87), and triple jump (34-0). She also tied at No. 1 in the high jump (4-9)…Don’t miss what’s happening at the hammer cage where we’ll have two throwers that are among the best in the country. The No. 1 seed is Lincoln’s Jillian Leahy with a best of 167-1, a distance that ranks. No. 3 from coast-to-coast. Narragansett’s Kylee Bennett is the two seed. She occupies the seventh spot in the nation with a PR of 157-2.

Team Outlook: With the ability to score quite a few points in the running events, Moses Brown looks primed for a two-peat on Sunday. St. Ray’s, North Smithfield and the Prout School should also be vying for top positions on the podium.
