Rhode Islanders once again showcased their talents, competing at one of three national championships this past weekend, primarily the New Balance Nationals Outdoor (NBNO) Championships in Philadelphia. Coming soon, we’ll provide a wrap-up of NBNO, the Nike Outdoor Nationals and the adidas Outdoor Nationals where we’ll highlight all the great happenings that occurred against the country’s finest track & field athletes.
With that being said, it’s hard to ignore when an athlete earns a national title. So despite an abundance of worthy contenders, it was relatively easy to pick this week’s recipients for the HOKA Athlete of the Week. For the girls, we’d like to congratulate Moses Brown’s Sophia Gorriaran for this week’s honor. In her final high school meet, Gorriaran won her speciality by capturing the 800-meter run with a meet record of 2 minutes, 4.59 seconds. The Harvard-bound senior’s effort was the fastest of all the national meets. It was also her second national title this year. She also claimed the 800m crown at the Nike Indoor Nationals in mid March. At NBNO, Gorriaran also smashed her state record in the mile on Saturday night where she finished with a time of 4:41.98, erasing her old mark of 4:43.74 from the Nike Outdoor Nationals as a sophomore in 2021. Next up for the Quaker standout is the U20 Outdoor Championships, held July 6-9 in Oregon.
