Throughout the next few weeks, Ocean State Running will be putting the spotlight on some of the top performances of the outdoor track and field season. While we’ve had our share of showstoppers over the past few months, these are the performances we feel stood out the most.

Whenever Jalen Moseley competes, you can always count on something special to happen. The versatile and talented junior from La Salle Academy, who is also a standout football player for the school’s team, excels in the sprints, hurdles and long jump, ranking No. 1 or among the state’s best in all three events. Of the three, Moseley’s forte was the jumps, particularly the long jump. While he only competed in the horizontal leap a few times this outdoor season, he still managed to leave his mark as the state’s best long jumper. We’re ranking his performance at the Sgt. Brian St. Germain Invitational as the most memorable. While he did exceed his effort at the May 10 meet two other times during the spring, it was this one that first broke a record that stood for nearly 90 years. Moseley earned that distinction by soaring to distance of 24 feet, 3 inches. His winning performance erased the 1936 mark of 24-1 by Moses Brown’s Dan Blount.
