With the class championships this weekend, our Rhode Island athletes took the weekend off to prepare for the statewide competition. But this past Thursday, a good number of schools made their way to Burrillville Middle School for the annual Skee Carter Invitational. For this week’s HOKA Athletes of the Week, we’d like to recognize the respective girls’ and boys’ winner of that meet – Mount Hope’s Jessica Deal and Moses Brown’s Eli Ziegler.
Deal was a runaway victor in her race where she led from gun-to-wire and posted a solid 19 minutes, 6.7 seconds. The Huskies’ sophomore was 40 second ahead of second-place Sophia Caito of South Kingstown, who was timed in 19:46.75.
Ziegler earned his title with a time of 16:13.76. After battling with eventual runner-up, Sean Gray of Portsmouth (16:20.11), for much of the race, the Quaker standout made a decisive move with about 600m remaining en route to an 18-second best for the 5K distance.
