The first state qualifier of the outdoor track and field season is set for this weekend, as teams head to Mount Pleasant’s Conley Stadium on Saturday for the annual Classical Classic.
Held roughly six weeks before the state meet, this competition often serves as a preview of what to expect when Rhode Island’s top athletes meet again in early June.
In 2025, nine individual or relay winners at the Classical Classic went on to win state titles. Those athletes and teams included East Providence’s Jack Pawlik in the boys’ 100m, Exeter/West Greenwich’s Owen Spira in the boys’ hammer throw, La Salle Academy in the boys’ 4x100m, Mount Hope’s Thea Jackson in the girls’ long jump, Pilgrim’s Hunter Schobel in the boys’ triple jump, Pilgrim’s Keaney Bayha in the girls’ 3,000m, Classical in the girls’ 4x400m, Burrillville’s Mackenzie Cleary in the girls’ javelin, and Barrington in the boys’ 4x800m relay.
The meet begins at 10 a.m. with field events and the freshmen/sophomore races. Track events on the oval will follow at 11 a.m., running in state meet order – starting with the 4x800m relay and concluding with the 4x400m relay.
On-site coverage (photos, video interview & more!) will be provided by Ocean State Running, with Marathon Sports also on site offering all kinds of cool merchandise, including meet T-shirts.
